The Dog Days of Summer means the time in summer (July 3 to August 11) that is hottest when people tend to relax and take a vacay. You notice how everything slows down this time of year. People put off making decisions. It’s harder to make appointments because so many people are unavailable.
Vacation From Electronic Input
Well, I’ve been taking a vacation from electronics. I’ve mentioned before about taking a break from so much electronic input. Now, I’m experimenting with going “almost cold turkey” for 2 weeks. No more checking Facebook every few minutes, spending hours watching YouTube videos, or spending the weekend watching Netflix.
It’s only two weeks, right? Here’s how it’s going:
- I notice I get really antsy and want to do the habitual behavior. Interesting. You don’t even realize this until you go cold turkey.
- Once I relax into the “not doing electronics”, I become present to my surroundings and experiences.
- After a few days, I feel a new kind of freedom.
- I start to reimagine my life. Great!
Hey, obviously we can no longer live a life without electronics. But, I’m telling you that a vacation from electronics is SO REFRESHING! I’m so much more present to my life.
There’s a reason why Amazon has a ton of books about electronic and internet addiction. Check that out.
My Dream Vacation
I’m not much of a drinker anymore, but I do love Guinness and good whiskey. Ireland is famous for both Guinness, and Jameson Irish Whiskey. Because of that, I’ve always wanted to visit Dublin, and go on the Guinness and Jameson Irish Whiskey Experience Tour.
You can skip the line and get a guided tour of the Guinness Storehouse, and Jameson Distillery complexes. The tour guide explains the ingredients, and the brewing and distilling processes.
Then, you get to relax and enjoy tastings of the beer and whiskey. To put you in the mood, here is a YouTube video of an awesome Irish singer, Hozier performing an impromptu, solo a cappella version of the traditional Irish song, “The Humours of Whiskey”. You can’t hear this without being touched and impressed. (The comments below the video are fun to read. Seems to bring out the Irish in us all.)
Barefoot Shoes
I’ve been having some problems with my feet (Achilles tendon injury). I’m a super active guy committed to fitness, so this is really important to me. You don’t appreciate something like a tendon until it stops you from doing what you want to do. When it hurts, you’re really limited.
I’ve been trying out Vivobarefoot shoes – I do this for zero drop (how much taller the heel of a shoe is than the forefoot). I also love the big toe boxes that allow my toes to be free and not all smushed up and distorted.
This page explains the concepts behind the Vivobarefoot shoes. The video on this page is especially interesting. Dr. Irene Davis, Director of Spaulding National Running Center (trained at Harvard Medical School) explains the science behind the shoe design.
This blog post explains a little more about the science of it. Take a look at the photo on the page comparing two feet. You can see how the foot that wore Vivobarefoot shoes is a lot more natural looking.
Famous (And Funny) Irish Quotes
Speaking of Ireland, like I mentioned earlier, I picked out some funny & famous Irish quotes from the source below.
“People do not change, they are merely revealed.”
Novelist Anne Enright, The Gathering, 2007
“If it was raining soup the Irish would go out with forks.”
Brendan Behan
“Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.”
Samuel Beckett, subsequently reimagined as the philosophy of Silicon Valley, 1954
“When you are lying drunk at the airport you’re Irish. When you win an Oscar you’re British.”
Brenda Fricker
This is the source of the quotes. Warning: some are highly charged, political, and even phobic, but all are wry examples of unique Irish wit.
