How To Pick Your Amazon FBA Brand Name | 2021

When you decide to go all-in with your Amazon FBA business, there are many factors to consider. What kinds of products will you sell? Where will you source them? And perhaps most importantly…What will your brand name be? Brand names like Nike, Keurig, and Samsung are synonymous with athletic gear, coffee, and electronics, but as a new Amazon seller, does your brand name really hold that much weight? While you’re not here to compete with these corporate juggernauts, the brand name you select is still important and can significantly affect the success of your new venture. For example, if you choose a generic name, like “John’s Great Products,” you could theoretically sell almost any type of product.

On the other hand, if you select a name like “John’s Pet Products” or “John’s Pet Leashes,” you’re limited to selling pet products and pet leashes. Opting for a niche-specific name isn’t always a bad move; however, you should consider your business model and what you plan to sell. For new sellers, I recommend keeping things generic so as not to pigeonhole your business opportunities. Keep reading below for more information on how to pick your Amazon FBA brand name.

Amazon FBA Brand Name & Trademarks

To create a generic brand name, you can try out a brand name generator, like Namelix, which generates short business names using artificial intelligence. You can type in a few letters or a word you like, and it will give you a list of names that are unlikely to be trademarked. Once you’ve found a name you want, you can quickly check if a trademark is associated with it by going to the USPTO website. Remember that the USPTO database will only tell you which brand names are trademarked in the US, not the UK or any other country.

If your brand name does have a trademark associated with it, you can still use it under certain circumstances. For example, if your name is trademarked for a completely different industry, say the oil and gas industry, you may still be able to use it for the pet industry. However, if your brand name is trademarked for a similar industry, it’s unlikely you will be able to snatch it up. Moreover, if a business name has been trademarked in the past but is now listed as “Dead” on the USPTO database, that means it expired and is now up for grabs. Fiverr or Upwork are great places to find trademark lawyers to help you with more advanced brand name queries.

Amazon FBA Brand Name & Web Presence

Beyond trademark issues, new sellers should consider if their brand name is already being used as a domain name or social media account name. To find out, you can use websites like Namechekr to search your brand name and pull up all domains and online accounts associated with it like Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, and more.

Having a solid domain name is essential for professionalism and can allow you to have a branded email account like john@johnspetproducts.com. To lock in a domain, you can use several websites. One I recommend is Bluehost because it’s easy to use and relatively inexpensive. Another option is GoDaddy

Brand Logos & Packaging

Once your brand name is locked in, you can start creating logos. Thanks to freelancing websites like Fiverr, getting a high-quality logo isn’t as complicated or costly as it used to be. You can easily search for freelancers that design logos/product packaging, and prices start at just $5.

For more advanced design work, I go with Upwork or 99Designs. If you’re just getting started with your business, I’d go the cheaper route and use Fiverr or Upwork as 99Designs is much more expensive.

New sellers selling private label products will likely encounter error code #5655. To get past this error, you will need to send photos of your product or packaging with branding permanently affixed, so having a brand name, logo, and packaging ready to go is helpful with the brand approval process.

Amazon FBA Storefront Name

When you’ve selected a brand name for your Amazon FBA business, It’s well worth it to register your brand on Amazon. Registered brands have access to more advanced branding tools, like storefronts. With storefronts, you can add product images, videos, brand-enhanced content, and customizable layouts that resemble a website, like the Adidas storefront example below.

In most cases, you’ll want your storefront name to be the same as your brand name, although you can always change it down the road if you would like.

In A Nutshell

I hope this information helps you learn how to pick your Amazon FBA brand name, a critical first step in launching your Amazon enterprise. At the end of the day, as a new seller, selecting a generic name will likely be the best choice. A generic brand name can help you hit the ground running with your business and allow you to expand to different product categories down the road. Ensure that you check for trademarks, domain names, and social profiles before committing to a brand name. Once you’ve found the perfect business name, save money on a logo and packaging design by utilizing freelancers on sites like Fiverr and Upwork. From there, you can register your brand and start building out your storefront!
