“Last Christmas, as we were considering abandoning the product, we hit $5k in sales. And we realized something. We learned so much about the industry that year.
We tracked our competitor’s sales monthly. We would read their reviews to see what people liked and didn’t. We’d started up email chains with clients who would reach out. And with all the knowledge we had gained, we realized we were in a much more comfortable position to take a pretty sizable risk and spend $20k on these molds. So we did it!
Our new product hit the shelves on September 15th and we were selling immediately.
Anyway, the point of this story is that if we had dove in with the molds from the beginning we would have lost a great deal of money because we would have made the wrong product. The product we were printing from home was not exactly what people wanted. Close… but, not close enough.
We learned how picky people in this category can be, down to the size, shape, and texture of the product. And before that year we were oblivious to all these details and would have failed miserably.
The thing that made us succeed was patience.
Although we didn’t FEEL that patient, we were forced to be patient due to the start-up costs. But that waiting period was crucial to our success.”
