How’d Cody Make His First Organic Sale…

I wanted to share a success story from one of the team members in my Amazon Winners Academy mentorship program, who just hit an exciting milestone.

After launching his product last week, Cody just secured his first organic sale. Congratulations, man!

For anyone just getting started, here are some insights Cody has gained along the way and lessons learned from his experience…

“I’m excited to say I’ve made my first organic sale using only social media! I started out to “test the waters,” and I’m happy to say it’s working.

My idea, in a nutshell, was to build a personal brand/following and eventually sell related products through Amazon/social shopping… and generally figure out other ways to use the reach for monetary gain.

Mistakes I Made:

  • I neglected Instagram out of pure laziness. I flooded TikTok and YouTube when I should have focused on Instagram.
  • I had a “focus on long-form content” mindset when my short-form (specifically on Instagram) is giving me the best overall return on time invested as far as getting eyes on me.
  • I didn’t add custom covers to my Instagram Reels for ages. As soon as I did, I saw an increase in followers. Your marketing is important!
  • I never set up a Facebook Page (until yesterday). I figure I’ve lost out on millions of views at this point.

Things I Did Correctly:

  • I’ve made sure my audience knows that a portion of sales goes towards charity. This is my own personal ‘value add,’ and how I’m differentiating myself.
  • Easier tutorials do very well, proving the point that dumbing the information down works.
  • Stayed on brand (fonts, colors, tone, etc).
  • I wear my product in the videos.
  • I’m nursing my audience; responding to comments, visiting profiles and liking related posts, telling them thank-you, etc.
  • Only about 20% of my videos have me in them. The other ones are close-up tutorials.

Takeaways:

  • Make sure you’re posting across all social media channels.
  • In my case, the video edit is very important. Learn this skill! You’ll be able to take advantage of other sellers using built-in editors and cheap AI-made content.
  • The Instagram audience subbed to my YouTube channel as well.
  • High-quality content is vital but takes time. A 10-second clip could sometimes take 3 hours to perform and edit.
  • I’m sticking to a roughly 10% product pitch and 90% regular content schedule. This may change over time. I’ll keep everyone updated.
  • I couldn’t do this without Canva
  • Think of Instagram like a website, that’s pretty much what it is.”
